Helena de Sousa Freitas

Helena de Sousa Freitas was born in Lisbon in 1976. She has a degree in Social Communication from the Setúbal Polytechnic College of Education and a postgraduation in Media Law from the Lisbon University School of Law.

She began her career in journalism in 1996, working for regional newspapers in Setúbal, and later she coordinated the Swimming section of the sports news website Infordesporto.pt.
Since 1998, she is a journalist at Lusa, Portugal's top news agency, and she also works with the Portuguese Journalists' Union.

Throughout 2001, Helena de Sousa Freitas made several interviews with renowned and aspiring Brazilian and Portuguese authors for the Brazilian website Literário Online.

Her first essay - “Jornalismo e Literatura: Inimigos ou Amantes?” (Journalism and Literature: Enemies or Lovers?) - was published in 2002 by Peregrinação Publications. It focuses on the relationship between journalism and literature all over the world, covering its intersections and divergences, the new journalism phenomenon and the unusual affinity of journalism and poetry, among many other topics.

That first essay is currently recommended reading in several university courses, both in Portugal (Universidade de Coimbra, Universidade Lusófona and Universidade Católica, among others) and Brazil (Universidade Federal de Brasília and Faculdade Cásper Líbero, just to name two).

Besides her journalistic and essay practices, Helena de Sousa Freitas is also a fiction writer of short stories and poetry. Her works have been published in several anthologies in Portugal, Brazil and Chile (in Spanish), as well as in about fifty websites from Portugal, Angola, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Spain, Sweden and the United States.
